Correspondence, memoranda, reports, minutes, publications, newsletters, and notes. The collection documents several aspects of his academic, professional, and social activities from 1960 to 2003. A majority of materials pertains to his involvement in the University of Florida Chapter of the American Association of University Professors. The collection also includes material related to several University committees, the College of Arts and Sciences, the Department of Religion, faculty-administration relations and governance in academic institutions. Several files are related to the University College and its merger with the College of Arts and Sciences in 1978 to become the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Also covered are his activities with the Citizens' Action Committee of the Gainesville City Commission.

Richard H. Hiers was born in Pennsylvania in 1932. He earned a Ph.D. in religious studies and ethics from Yale University in 1961 and a J.D. from the University of Florida in 1983. He was employed at the University of Florida for a span of forty-two years beginning in 1961 and ending in 2003 at the time of his retirement.
